2008 was the start of it all: Anna graduated from The University of North Texas with a BFA in Drawing and Painting, she and Luis got married, and Anna started her small business making commissioned photo-realistic oil paintings. Coincidentally, 2008 was also the year of the Great Recession, and although she loved working on the tedious details of a photo-realistic portrait or landscape, Anna quickly realized that her art business needed to be adjusted. She had a growing desire to make art that was more accessible and more meaningful to those that she was walking with. Through lots (and lots) of trial and error, she picked up her first calligraphy pen in 2011 and never looked back.
In the Fall of 2011, Anna and Luis packed up their little pickup truck full of art and with their newborn son, Axel, in tow, they set up their first booth at a show in Fort Worth, TX. A lot was learned from that show, both good and bad, but they definitely realized that they were onto something great. Since then, they have participated in more art shows than they can count, including Renegade Austin, Brit+Co Re:Make Austin, and Flea Style.
Becoming a mom had more of an impact on Anna's art making process than she ever could have imagined. Anna's work has evolved tremendously over the years, and while it took some time to really develop a style, she has landed quite comfortably in a place that allows her to both flourish as an artist and remain true to her own unique approach to watercolor, drawing, and calligraphy. She continues to work from her in-home studio as a stay-at-home mom to Axel, Eden, and Luca.
Anna Tovar has truly become a family run operation. In 2015, Anna and Luis realized that she just couldn't do it all. After many discussions and brain-storming, Luis officially joined the Anna Tovar team. He is now in charge of all wholesale accounts and is an extra set of hands to help with the ins and outs of the business. He has already been a tremendous asset, and they both look forward to seeing how Anna Tovar will thrive and grow with him on the team.
